Sooooooo where is the second season?! Like forreal. The final Episode was everything I loved and hated about Houseki no Kuni. There was just so much to enjoy, how could you not love this series?
First we started with Phos wondering just what sensei was. They then go to take down a squad of Lunarians, except that Phos actually rips one from the cloud and it gains what appears to be consciousness and tries to speak before being destroyed. Phos wants to know, but no one wants to speak about it either.
Then, we moved on to Padparascha waking up after being asleep for centuries and then we learn that they have lost a lot of time according to Rutile. They are gorgeous on their own and Phos reveals to them that they are thinking of confronting sensei. However, Pad tells them not to and rather to understand their situation and where they sit. Though, they are not able to do anything as Padparscha falls back asleep and Rutile comes back to collect them.
Phos reveals their plan to Cinnabar who becomes adorably tsundere about the whole thing and is interested in the job, but tells Phos that they need to think about it a bit more. The series ends with shots of all of the gems and Phos reflecting on whom they are.
What is fantastic is that the last episode shows us that Phos does have a slightly different energy level as well as mannerism, but at the end of the day, Phos is Phos. Phos has questions, wants to do things that the other gems frown upon, and tries to accomplish them at their own peril. I don’t care to read manga because I am so busy personally, but this is a series that I have just picked up everything available in Akihabara to read.
Well, this anime season is closing up and this week, while I could talk about the amazingness of anime like Inuyashiki or even Imouto Sae Ireba Ii, I choose to talk about the crapstorm that is Juuni Taisen. Juuni Taisen started off so strongly this season yet, it has quickly just fallen out of favor with so many viewers and there’s a good reason why. These last few weeks have been utter garbage, but it’s this week’s episode that just cinched it, not to mention that it’s the last episode of the season.
I’m talking about Nezumi’s story. While it was obvious that Nezumi was going to win from the start, finding out that his power was to go down 100 paths to find the best course of action was stupid beyond belief. Then, this week, we followed Nezumi as he went about his everyday life and ultimately decide on his wish: to forget. Nezumi goes through many different thoughts while trying to figure out what he wants to wish for in the end. He has a list of 99 wishes that could be possible, all of which he has stupid reasons for not wishing, but in the end, he just wishes to forget. So that long, rather thought heavy and dumb story, led to that final moment.
While I can understand why this was one of the worst episodes because of the focus on the neuroticism that is Nezumi, I think we can give Nezumi some credit here. As someone who had to die 99 different times in order to find a plausible path as well as being a witness to the deaths of many people, Nezumi really lived through a lot and it’s clear that he’s had a lot of trauma. So with the PTSD that he experienced, we can understand why he would just choose to forget everything. I’m sure this is a reflection of the experiences of many soldiers in battle, but of course, but at the same time, I still question what the hell this ending was supposed to be about.
What a Christmas gift, you all! The fight is coming to a close and now we only see the strongest combatants, even if this means another fusion. Dr. Paparoni became one with his creations to form the huge Anilaza, a powerful monster who put Universe 7 in danger and forced them to work as a team. Like I said before, I think this was a wasted opportunity, because going 5vs1 on a gigantic robot is a mini-arc on itself and not something to resolve in 10 minutes. It even almost disqualifies Goku! Lucky for us there was Frieza, casually saving his nemesis as he is the only capable of beating Jiren. A few minutes later it was Android 18’s turn to shine, sacrificing herself to save his brother and keep him in the platform. If I told you this would happen you would probably think of it as a big deal… but it wasn’t, and that’s a shame. We also see Mule —Universe 3’s god of destruction— outside his robot Mosco, seconds before disappearing forever with his universe. Another episode that Toei felt like it wasn’t important. To be fair, it was a good episode compared to the others, but it could be way better given the time to develop some scenes. Another great moment was the end, leading us to the final battle between the Z Warriors and the Pride Troopers. Who will win? That’s a stupid question, but I still want Goku to lose. Can you imagine Vegeta winning? or Frieza? And what if we get something along the lines of Super 17?! Oh, the possibilities… how boring to see Goku always taking all the credit.
The first scene in this week’s episode of Juuni Taisen gives an ending and closure to Tora and Ushi’s fateful encounter.
As Tora’s lifeless body leans against a tree after Ushi honorably put her out of her misery, Ushi can’t help but feel sentimental and he wonders if it’s because she reminds her of “that girl he met once on the battlefield”. That’s moving moment number one. Tora would never have imagined that that warrior she admired all these years still remembered her. But he does. Fondly.
He then goes on to say that it would be offensive to compare a peerless warrior like Tora to a naive little girl and how, though he doesn’t drink, he would have loved to have a drink with her.
When he utters those words, we can’t help but feel that Tora would be more than pleased, and in fact, she probably would feel like her life goal was achieved by gaining the recognition of a warrior she has admired and tried to emulate for years. It’s just too bad they couldn’t spend more time together catching up. This made for a great opening scene and definitely the best moment of the week for this otaku.
