[Shounen Adventure Anime Winter 2018] Like Madan no Ou to Vanadis? Watch This!

In the Fall Season of 2014, alongside many other interesting shows such Parasyte, we were given Madan no Ou to Vanadis, an interesting tale based in medieval times. Such themes are not new to anime, with stories based in historical fiction being aired every single year, including the anime in the spotlight this time, Nanatsu no Taizai (Seven Deadly Sins) and Grancrest Senki (Record of Grancrest War). These shows are both heavily influenced by concepts of a medieval European nature, even going as far as to feature concepts of mythology in their storylines. These anime are Shounen titles definitely worth checking out given the fact that they are fresh off the proverbial grill and ready for anime fans like ourselves to pounce and enjoy!

About Madan no Ou to Vanadis (Lord Marksman and Vanadis)

  • Episodes: 13

  • Aired: October 2014 – December 2014

In an alternate version of Europe, tensions have escalated into war between the countries of Zhcted and Brune. Zhcted is a nation ruled by seven War Maidens called the Vanadis, one of whom, Eleonora Viltaria, wages war on the neighbouring Brune. With the entirety of his fellow Brune soldiers completely decimated by Zhcted, Brunian archer and earl, Tigrevurmud Vorn finds himself at the mercy of Eleonora. However, she spares his life on the fulfilment of one condition: “Become mine”. Now Tigrevurmud finds himself in a strange new environment, with the mysterious Eleonora’s strange words echoing in his mind…

The formula used in Madan no Ou to Vanadis is one the permutations of which we have seen several times over the years as anime fans; however, these shows remain interesting because there are innumerable ways to use the same tools. Nanatsu no Taizai and Grancrest Senki, by virtue of being similar to Madan no Ou to Vanadis, also bear multiple similarities to each other, such as the inclusion of magic, aristocracy, war, as well as the little dash of ecchi that finds its way into Shounen titles a lot of the time. This is also true of Madan no Ou to Vanadis. As much as we’d love to see everything about the shows we watch, we just can’t always catch the details – this is why it is awesome to open up discussion with other anime fans, so we’d like to know what you think! Drop a comment below if you spot any more similarities, the more the merrier!

I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
