Comic Girls follows the lives of female students who all dorm together and aspire to become professional mangaka. Kaoruko dreams of becoming a mangaka and has a hard time trying to find what style exactly suits her, but hopefully at this dorm, Kaoruko will be able to find her niche! Luckily, there are mangaka of all genres at this dorm including Ruki who specializes in smut, Tsubasa whose talent is shounen/fantasy, Koyume who works on shoujo, and Suzu who terrorizes everyone with her specialty, horror.

1. Characters

Like many only girls slice of life anime before it, Comic Girls features an array of characters following that dere type, but for the most part, the characters are super fun and their energy is infectious. It’s fun watching them interact. Kaoruko is also extremely cute and funny, especially when she just can’t seem to get it together. While the interactions aren’t too different from other slice of life anime, it’s still fun to watch how a bunch of moe mangaka girls do it.

2. Iyashikei Effect

Clearly, this is one of those anime you watch when you don’t want to stress or just want to kick back and relax at the end of a long day. Comic Girls just has this sort of healing effect that really helps to ease us at the end of the day. When we saw that Comic Girls was up, we didn’t dread the idea of watching it like we did with so many others when we were busy. That alone says how calming and relaxing this anime is.

3. Plot Development

Surprisingly enough, there’s a tiny bit of plot development in Comic Girls! We get to see Kaoruko go through several series of different manga techniques and writing styles before she finally figures things out. Even at the end, we see that she is still growing ever so slowly, but she manages to do things that before, would have been extremely difficult for her. It’s great to see that she has a bit of character growth in this anime rather than just ending off exactly where she started.

1. All Girls Anime

There’s no lack of anime in this genre, but that doesn’t mean people are going to be so keen on it. If you hate anime that clearly just do not want to showcase boys, you’ll be sorely disappointed as this anime is all girls, even at school. As such, you’ll get the same humor that is included in anime like New Game! and Gochuumon wa Usagi Desuka, which tend to have milder jokes and softer themes. There’s some silliness here, but no different from a lot of all-girls anime, however we completely understand that this might not be for everyone.

2. Lack of Plot

One thing people seem to want out of a slice of life anime is a plot. Like, why? If you watch Comic Girls expecting an actual plot, you will be sorely disappointed. This is an anime about the lives of girls who just so happen to want to be mangaka. It won’t differ from many of those slice of life anime featuring all girls casts. Nothing dramatic is going to happen nor is a romance in the future. If you want plot, this isn’t the anime for you.

With that, we end our review of Comic Girls! Overall, this anime was a great watch, although probably not for everyone. It’s still a slice of life that we recommend to many who enjoy all girls and not so serious plots. What do you think about this anime? Was it your cup of tea or do you think it failed as a slice of life anime? Share your thoughts in the comments below and thank you for checking in with us yet again here at Honey’s Anime!
