Why You Should Watch Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku)

1. Characters

One of the best things about Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (or simply known as Wotakoi) is the characters that are included. There’s a wide range of different otaku characters. Usually “wotaku” refers to otaku who do not want to be associated with namely anime, so who we have is a casual otaku who likes bishoujo, two fujoshi with 1 being a cosplayer otaku and the other being into anime and video games as well, and lastly, a full on gamer otaku who occasionally indulges in anime. This eclectic group of otaku really help to show the differences between otaku and how they work with each other to form long lasting friendships.

2. Relationship Dynamics

With all the different otaku involved, we also get to see how their relationship dynamics work. They are all very different, so the characters have to figure out ways to work things out in a rather realistic approach like in most relationships. Tarou and Hanako are constantly arguing about things, yet we see that they actually do get along when they are alone. Hirotaka and Narumi get along well, but they are also extremely slow in their relationship, which many people might have to deal with as well. These portrayals of realistic yet not dramatic relationship dynamics make Wotakoi a rather enjoyable romance anime to watch.

3. Content

If you loved slice of life anime like Lucky Star that showed bits and pieces of otaku culture and the everyday lives of an otaku, Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii may be the anime for you. We get to see the characters do things like go to Comiket or browse for manga at Animate. It’s fun to hear the characters reference Monster Hunter and play MMORPGs as well! Since the characters come from all spectrums of otaku culture, we really get to see a lot of variety!

Why You Should Skip Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku)

1. Romances

If you sought Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii for its romance, well, this anime will not meet your expectations. As one might expect, this romantic comedy about otaku relationships is just not very romantic. Does that really surprise anyone? The focus is more on different people in relationships, and that doesn’t mean watching characters making googly eyes with each other all day. However, if you just want a lot of kissing and then some, you should have been watching Amai Choubatsu, although that’s not very romantic either.

2. Plot

If you’re looking for real plot, then you will be sorely disappointed. Sure, it’s about the romantic relationship between otaku, but plot points don’t develop too much in Wotakoi. In fact, the brunt of the anime is slice of life, while the last few episodes seem to take it up a step with the relationship between Narumi and Hirotaka. All the same, it’s not like you’re going to get a lot of deep drama between the characters. This is part of Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii’s charm, but this is a slice of life anime and you better prepare for that.
